How stone-coated steel holds up to southwest Michigan weather

From 2016 through 2026, NOAA logged 168 thunderstorm wind reports, 48 hail reports, and 54 winter storms in Allegan, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, and Ottawa counties. Every southwest Michigan metal roof has to take all three, stone-coated steel included.

  2. Lake MacatawaThunderstorm winds over 90 mph
  3. South Haven74 mph gust at the airport
  4. Kalamazoo2-inch hail

Wind: rated to 120 mph

  • DECRA, Tilcor, and Westlake warrant their panels against blow-off in winds up to 120 mph
  • Winds over 90 mph at Lake Macatawa in May 2025 were still under that limit

Hail: Class 4, but not dent-proof

  • DECRA rates its panels UL 2218 Class 4, the top impact class
  • A Class 4 rating doesn't promise a panel won't dent
  • DECRA and Tilcor warranties cover hail damage only when a hailstone up to 2.5 inches punches through the panel
  • Ask your insurer whether your policy covers cosmetic dents on a metal roof
Ice-and-water shield goes under the panels at every eave.

MSU Extension explains that ice dams form when attic heat melts the snow on a roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves. Michigan's residential building code, R905.2.7.1, calls for ice-and-water shield from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. Our stone-coated steel price includes that leak protection.

Stone-coated steel roofing: the first four answers

What homeowners ask us first about a stone-coated steel roof.

How long does a stone-coated steel roof take to install?

About 3 to 5 days on most homes with Lifetime Construction Builders, from tear-off to cleanup. Steep roofs with dormers, valleys, skylights, and chimneys take longer; DECRA's own installation guide puts that kind of roof at 3 to 4 squares a day.

Can stone-coated steel go on a low-slope roof?

No. DECRA, Tilcor, and Westlake set a minimum slope of 3 in 12, meaning 3 inches of rise for every 12 inches across. Some panel lines need 4 in 12. Low-slope porch roofs and flat sections need a different roof. Lifetime Construction Builders measures each slope during the free inspection.

What are the disadvantages of a stone-coated steel roof?

Price comes first: it costs more than Atlas architectural shingles or exposed-fastener steel from Lifetime Construction Builders. Careless steps can dent a panel, especially at the eaves during gutter cleaning. Some stone granules wash into the gutters, and a repair can mean lifting several interlocked panels.

How long does a stone-coated steel roof last?

No maker publishes a service life. DECRA and Tilcor give the original owner a lifetime limited warranty with 30 years on the finish, and Westlake gives 50 years, limited and transferable. Lifetime Construction Builders adds its own lifetime transferable warranty on the installation.

How we install a stone-coated steel roof

Every stone-coated steel job runs the same six steps. Luis, our regional manager, is your contact for the whole project, from the first visit to the final cleanup, and he picks up your calls.

  1. Call, and a real person answers

Call (616) 360-2522 any time; the line is answered 24/7. Tell us your town and the roof you have now.

  2. A free inspection and a written estimate

We look at the roof's size, pitch, and decking, the things that set your price, and put that price in a written estimate. It doesn't change once you have it.

See what a roof inspection covers.

  3. You pick the brand and profile

Choose DECRA, Tilcor, or Westlake panels in a tile, shake, or shingle profile. Brand and profile both move the price, so your estimate is written for the one you pick.

  4. Tear-off, underlayment, and ice-and-water shield

The crew tears the old roof off down to the deck, then lays new underlayment and the ice-and-water shield.

    Read about roof replacement.

  5. Steel panels, trim, and flashing go on

The stone-coated steel panels go on next, then the trim and the flashing around chimneys, vents, and walls.

  6. Cleanup, and your warranty starts

Before the crew leaves, they haul the old roofing away, clean up, and sweep the yard for nails. Your lifetime transferable warranty covers the installation, and the panels carry the maker's published product warranty.

Stone-coated steel compared with shingles and other metal roofing materials

Stone-coated steel looks like tile, shake, or shingle and is made of steel underneath. Here's how it compares with Atlas shingles and the other metal products we install.

Stone-coated steel

Each panel is a layered system: steel with an aluminum-zinc (Galvalume) coating, an acrylic base coat, ceramic-coated stone granules, and a clear acrylic overglaze. The color comes from the stone granules, not a paint film like polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF).

Standing seam runs $1,300 to $1,650 per 100 square feet, $24,000 to $42,000 on most homes. Exposed-fastener steel, where the screws show, runs $900 to $1,150, or $16,000 to $28,000.

More stone-coated steel roofing questions

Brands, noise, upkeep, repairs, and who's doing the work. Anything else, ask on the phone.

A person answers 24/7(616) 360-2522
Which stone-coated steel brand is best?

No independent source ranks one brand best. Lifetime Construction Builders installs DECRA, Tilcor, and Westlake panels, and they differ in profiles and warranty terms. Westlake adds an FM 4475 "Very Severe Hail" rating, and Tilcor's CF panels hide their screws.

Is a stone-coated steel roof loud in the rain?

Rain noise depends on the whole roof, not the panels alone. DECRA credits the stone coating with damping the sound, and the deck, underlayment, and attic insulation underneath matter too. Every Lifetime Construction Builders installation includes new underlayment.

Can I walk on a stone-coated steel roof?

Yes, with care. DECRA's homeowner manual says its panels are made to be walked on in soft-soled shoes. Step in the low pans of tile profiles and stay off the side laps. If a panel does get dented, call Lifetime Construction Builders at (616) 360-2522.

Can a damaged stone-coated steel panel be repaired?

Usually. DECRA's guidance is a touch-up kit when the damage on a panel is under 10 inches across, and a new panel above that. Because the panels interlock, a new one can mean lifting its neighbors. Lifetime Construction Builders inspects the damage for free.

How much does a stone-coated steel roof weigh?

About 1.3 to 1.5 pounds per square foot installed, by the makers' figures. DECRA panels fastened to the deck weigh 1.3, and DECRA on wood battens and Westlake weigh about 1.5. Lifetime Construction Builders installs all three brands.

What if my new roof leaks?

Call (616) 360-2522, where a real person answers 24/7. Lifetime Construction Builders backs every installation with its lifetime transferable warranty, and Luis, our regional manager, is your contact.

Are you licensed and insured in Michigan?

Yes. Lifetime Construction Builders holds Michigan license 252400088, which you can check with LARA, and carries $1 million in general liability and $2 million in workers' comp. The company is family owned by Daniel Retana and has been in business since 2009.
